In celebration of the 100th anniversary of receiving city rights, the Polish Senate has declared 2026 the Year of Gdynia – honouring a city that stands as a symbol of modern Poland’s ambition, resilience, and innovation.

Built almost from scratch in the 1920s on the site of a small fishing village, Gdynia was one of the most remarkable urban projects of the reborn Polish state. Within just over a decade, it transformed into a thriving port and industrial hub – designed to give Poland independent access to the sea. Its rapid rise made it a powerful emblem of economic growth and modernity in the interwar period.

Today,

Gdynia still carries that forward-looking spirit. Known as the “Polish Bauhaus,” the city enchants visitors with its clean-lined modernist architecture, seaside atmosphere, and creative energy. It’s also part of the vibrant Tricity, alongside historic Gdańsk and the elegant resort town of Sopot – all seamlessly connected and perfect to explore in one trip.

Gdynia is not just about history – it’s alive with culture. The city hosts world-class events like the Open’er Festival and the prestigious Gdynia Film Festival, held at the iconic Gdynia Film Centre – a hub for cinema lovers and creatives.

From its dynamic beginnings in 1926, through the hardships of World War II and the pivotal events of December 1970, to its present-day energy, Gdynia has remained a city shaped by change and courage. Recognizing 2026 as its year is a tribute to its crucial role in Poland’s economic development and political transformation.

Today, Gdynia invites visitors to experience its “sea of possibilities” – where modern design meets maritime heritage, and where every street tells a story of bold vision turned into reality.
