“THE PEASANTS” BY DK WELCHMAN & HUGH WELCHMAN with stunning cinematography and powerful performances presents a picture of rural life and a poignant portrait of resilience amidst adversity.
It is a story of Jagna, a young woman determined to forge her own path within the confines of a late 19th-century Polish village – a hotbed of gossip and ongoing feuds, held together, rich and poor, by pride in their land, adherence to colourful traditions and deep-rooted patriarchy.
When she finds herself caught between the conflicting desires of the village’s richest farmer, his eldest son, and other leading men of the community, her resistance puts her on a tragic collision course with the surrounding community.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION – 4 wins and 20 nominations
“SCARBORN (KOS)” BY PAWEL MASLONA – an action-paced, modern and universal emotional story about people who overcome prejudice and differences in the name of freedom and equality.
The film tells the story of the war veteran Kościuszko, a trusted ally of Gen. George Washington’s and a colonel in the Continental Army, who returns to his native Poland with his valet and confidante, Jean Lapierre, a Black man who was known as Domingo.
Together, the duo fight to liberate Polish serfs from an oppressive feudal system, sparking a national uprising against the Russian Empire in 1794.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION – 9 wins and 16 nominations
“IN THE REARVIEW” BY MACIEJ HAMELA – a volunteer aid van steers through minefields to leave Ukraine and tries to get through numerous military checkpoints.
The movie director, M. Hamela offers us a seat in his car, guiding the documentary from behind the wheel and behind the camera, crisscrossing the roads of Ukraine to transport uprooted refugees safely to Poland.
The van traverses tens of thousands of kilometres and serves as a waiting room, hospital, shelter, and zone for confidences and confessions among compatriots thrown together by chance. It is a collective portrait composed of an array of experiences of Ukrainians who share a single goal: finding a safe haven in the throes of conflict.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION–22 wins and 13 nominations
